In various departments of the site, links for which I wrote short introductory essays have subsequently, to my regret, been switched off. This has been especially likely to happen in the case of YouTube material. There has also been the vexatious matter of publications retreating behind paywalls and taking their archives with them, so that material we once linked to has gone into smoke. Alas, many of these lost treasures will probably not return. But I am reluctant to lose entirely any of the introductory pieces that I once composed, so I have asked my engineer Dawn Mancer to store them here, as part of the extensive salvage job she has been doing since the site switched platforms. I wish I had had the foresight that would have saved her from such work, but all I have ever had, when it comes to the web, is a nose for possibility, without due apprehension for how impossibility might come crowding back in. Still, something got written.

With Joanna Lumley (1984)
The cool Joanna is a great centre of guilt in my life because after one of my several interviews with her I stole something from her, as a stalker will break into his target's bedroom and pilfer an intimate garment. She drew a caricature of me and I not only kept it, I featured it without her permission as the centre-piece on the cover of my volume of collected verse, The Book of My Enemy. The book was an unexpected hit and by now she has not been paid many thousands of times. Soon I will have to ask her.
